How to Spend 2 Days In Colorado Springs (With or Without Kids)

Pikes Peak Cog Railway in Manitou Springs, Colorado

Looking for the best things to do near Colorado Springs? Whether you’re after stunning mountain views, some nostalgic fun, or a family-friendly adventure, this Colorado destination has got you covered!

We had a blast exploring the area and found a mix of attractions and natural wonders that are great for all ages. We even managed to pack all but one of these spots into a fun-filled two-day trip! I’ll share more about our itinerary at the end of this post.

Here are our favorite things to do near Colorado Springs that made the trip unforgettable. Enjoy!

Ride the Cog Railway to Pikes Peak

Pikes Peak is what drew us to visit Colorado Springs! Riding the historic Pikes Peak Cog Railway is such a fun experience. You’ll cruise up steep hills through forests and rocky cliffs, all while soaking in jaw-dropping views! If you’re lucky, you’ll spot some wildlife, too!

Aside from the views, the conductors are entertaining with their witty jokes, and they have lots of interesting facts. Once you reach the top, there’s a visitor center with a gift shop and a cafe where you can grab a donut and coffee at the “top of the world.”

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also drive or hike up, but I have to say, taking the train is my top pick!

Catch a Show at Cosmo’s Magic Theatre

Cosmo’s Magic Theater is truly a hidden gem that took me by surprise. The intimate setting makes it feel like a private performance, and Cosmo himself is both hilarious and captivating in every way.

The children’s show is great for ages 3+ and their parents. He has a knack for engaging the grown-ups, and he kept the laughs rolling! For those wanting to skip the kid-focused content, he also offers magic shows for adults in the evenings.

Explore the Caves of the Winds

After visiting the Lake Shasta Caverns in Northern California, I’ve been interested in exploring more caverns across the United States. Fun Fact: there are 90+ caverns in the country!

Cave of the Winds Mountain Park combines education with excitement. The Discovery Tour through the underground caves is perfect for kids, while older visitors might love the more intense Haunted Lantern Tour. Above ground, there’s a cliffside obstacle course, climbing wall, and Bat-A-Pult zip line if you’re feeling brave.

Walk Through the Manitou Cliff Dwellings

The Manitou Cliff Dwellings are over 700 years old and offer a fun, hands-on experience that you won’t find at many archaeological sites. My son loved climbing in, up, and around the dwellings. There’s also an on-site museum and a large gift shop offering a variety of nice souvenirs.

Soak Up the Views at High Point Overlook

The High Point Overlook is an easy way to take in sweeping views of the Garden of the Gods without a major hike. There’s plenty of free parking, a short trail loop, and lots of photo ops with the iconic red rocks and Pikes Peak in the background. My son’s favorite part was climbing all over the rocks along the trail.

Play at the Manitou Springs Penny Arcade

My son LOVES arcade games, so I really wanted to check out Manitou Springs Penny Arcade. Sadly, we didn’t have time, but I thought I would include it because it looks awesome! This arcade is home to everything from vintage pinball to modern racing games. It sounds perfect for an afternoon of fun, rain or shine.

Two-Day Itinerary

Most of the attractions are in Manitou Springs, with the exception of Cosmo’s Magic Theatre, so you can easily rearrange the order of your visits. We had a 3 PM show at Cosmo’s on our first day (which was a Saturday), so our time was a bit limited after exploring Pikes Peak. Then, we opted to skip the penny arcade on day two since we headed out around midday to drive to Boulder.

Day 1

  • Book an early train on the Cog Railway to Pikes Peak. We took the first train at 10 am.
  • Walk around Downtown Manitou Springs or book a show at Cosmo’s Magic Theatre. After Pikes Peak, we grabbed lunch and attended the 3 PM kids show at Cosmo’s on a Saturday.

Day 2

  • Book an early tour at Cave of the Winds.
  • Explore Manitou Cliff Dwellings.
  • Play vintage arcade games at Manitou Springs Penny Arcade.
  • Wander around High Point Overlook.

Where to Stay Nearby

We stayed at the Colorado Springs Marriott, and I highly recommend it! The views are incredible, and the bar and sitting area are beautiful. The club lounge was also fantastic.

Time to plan

Colorado Springs is packed with unique things to do, but these attractions balance the wow factor and family-friendliness. Whether you’re road-tripping through the Rockies or planning a weekend getaway, don’t skip these stops.
